What is Zulu set in virtual production?

Zulu set is a term used in virtual production that refers to physical sets or props created for actors to interact with as stand-ins for virtual assets. Invented and still in use by the Avatar team, zulu sets have become an invaluable tool in modern filmmaking, allowing directors and VFX teams to better bridge the gap between live-action and animation. 

A zulu set can range from a simple miniature prop to a full-scale replica of a location or character, built with varying scales depending on size differences between actor and character. Often fabricated out of lightweight materials such as foam, these stand-ins provide filmmakers with a tangible reference point which they can then replace with CG elements in post-production. This hybrid form of filmmaking has been seen in several big budget films over the past few years, including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), The Lion King (2019) and Mortal Engines (2018).

The advantages of using zulu sets are numerous; as well as providing a reference point for VFX artists, they also offer visual cues for lighting technicians, helping them make sure all shadows match up during the shoot.
