What is Virtual Space in virtual production?

Defined as an area that exists within the virtual world and either corresponds 1:1. or proportionately with a real-world space, virtual space has revolutionized film and television production by allowing directors to create unique landscapes and backdrops without ever leaving their editing room. 

Ensuring a virtual space works in virtual production requires technical knowledge and creative skill. Depending on the level of realism desired, developers may need to draw upon software such as Unreal Engine and Blender to build 3D models and textures. An experienced VFX supervisor must also be present to coordinate between all departments involved and make sure the final product meets high standards. 

Famous examples of virtual spaces used in films and TV shows abound. Game of Thrones relied heavily on computer-generated environments to craft its mythical Westeros. At the same time, The Mandalorian uses a combination of physical sets and digital elements to recreate its many worlds. More recently, Disney’s Artemis Fowl series employed extensive virtual photography to construct its extraordinary underground lairs and fantastic locations. 

All these projects were made possible through a complex network of professionals and tools. Programmers utilized powerful gaming engines like Unity and CryEngine, while artists drew upon various animation programs and motion capture technology. Finally, post-production teams had the arduous task of combining all the disparate pieces into one cohesive whole.
