What is Video engineer in virtual production?

A video engineer is a key member of the production crew on any set, but especially when it comes to virtual production. This individual’s job is essential in making sure that all signals are routed and maintained from sources to destinations within a volume as well as other A/V operations. A great deal of knowledge is needed for this role in order to ensure high quality output for productions.

A good video engineer must have an array of skills specifically tailored to work in the virtual space. The most important one being a strong understanding of signal flow management—knowing how to route incoming audio-visual data while also monitoring outputs to make sure they remain at peak performance levels. Additionally, they need to know how to connect disparate hardware and software systems together without hindering performance or reliability. Lastly, they should be familiar with editing software so that they can quickly tweak visuals as needed by the director or producer. 

On a virtual set, the video engineer will often be responsible for setting up cameras and monitors used during filming; checking and calibrating camera white balance; switching between multiple input feeds; tracking and logging source locations, outputs, cables, and other equipment; ensuring picture accuracy across various displays; troubleshooting issues; confirming syncronization of digital soundtracks; and providing real time technical support to talent and staff.
