What is Systems technical director in virtual production?

A Systems Technical Director is an integral part of any virtual production set. As the crewmember with overall responsibility for all real-time specific hardware, their job requires a vast array of skills and responsibilities in order to ensure that the volume runs smoothly. They play a vital role in setting up, operating, and troubleshooting the myriad systems used on a virtual set, such as LED walls, real-time render nodes, tracking systems, and DMX lighting control. 

When it comes to virtual production sets, one of the most important qualities a Systems Technical Director must possess is a deep understanding of technical architecture. The TD needs to be able to design a system around the parameters of the given project, taking into account requirements such as available time, budget, talent, performance capture systems, etc. This ensures that each element in the process works together seamlessly. 

In addition to being highly knowledgeable about how various technical components fit together, Systems Technical Directors should also have strong interpersonal skills and problem solving ability. Working closely with other members of the crew, including directors, VFX supervisors and camera operators, they need to coordinate communication between departments, assist with shot setups, and resolve technical issues quickly. Furthermore, because each shoot will require different types of equipment and setup configurations, TDS must be flexible and adaptive when navigating complex challenges that arise during the course of production. 

Tasks performed by Systems Technical Directors may include overseeing the installation and maintenance of monitors on set; providing support for tracking systems; calibrating monitors and cameras; testing network connections; setting up tracking cameras; monitoring GPU usage; working with DMX lighting controllers to create desired effects; managing data storage; and much more. To do this successfully, they need to stay up-to-date with new technologies and trends in the industry.
