What is Real-time compositor in virtual production?

This crewmember is responsible for integrating different 2D and 3D elements live during production within the volume set. Having such an expert on hand ensures that all visual components work together harmoniously, creating the most captivating shots possible. 

To excel at this job, a real-time compositor needs to have extensive technical knowledge of traditional VFX principles, with experience working in both 2D and 3D worlds. Additionally, they must be able to read complex scripts and provide creative input when needed. Furthermore, since they’re expected to troubleshoot on the fly, it’s important for them to remain calm under pressure and think outside the box when solving problems. 

In a typical day on a virtual set, a real-time compositor would work with both pre-existing and newly created visuals as directed by the team. They might arrange motion graphics into layered compositions, composite CGI assets into scene footage or add effects like lens flares and camera shakes. In short, they are the ones who make sure all the pieces come together to form one cohesive image. 

Ultimately, having a talented real-time compositor onboard helps streamline production and maximize the potential of virtual sets. Without someone filling this role, there would be no way to guarantee the highest quality output in a timely manner.
