What is Mission control in virtual production?

In virtual production, Mission Control is the team of artists and engineers who operate the equipment driving a smart stage or any space used for capturing media. The mission control team is responsible for distributing content, manipulating images, tracking cameras, recording footage, and creatively visualizing data – activities also referred to as “brain bar” and “volume operations.”

For successful mission control in virtual production projects, everyone involved must have an understanding of the entire process. This means having a director, cinematographer, CG supervisor, technical directors, systems engineer, compositor, data wrangler, and other experts communicating closely and frequently throughout the shoot. 

A good practice for a mission control team is to make sure everyone has a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities during shooting. It helps to create checklists that can be used to ensure that all tasks are completed on time. Additionally, everyone needs to stay organized and remain focused on the goal. A helpful tactic is to break down tasks into small pieces so they can easily be managed by multiple people simultaneously.
