What is Machine room in virtual production?

A machine room in virtual production is a critical component of the entire production system. It is an enclosed space that houses key components, such as computer networks, video servers, render nodes, and other necessary infrastructure. Located on or near the volume where filming takes place, the machine room enables directors to move around freely without worrying about cables getting tangled up. It’s also known as a server closet.

What should a machine room have for virtual production? This depends on the specific project being worked on and what equipment needs to be included. Generally speaking, though, it should have the proper power sources and cooling elements; proper cabling connections; UPSs (uninterruptible power supplies); media storage solutions; and networking devices to enable communication between different locations. 

Typically, this job falls to a technical director, who manages all aspects of the machine room's operations. They will oversee setup and installation, ensure everything is running smoothly and efficiently, troubleshoot any issues that arise, and make sure the whole system is maintained correctly. As such, technical directors are essential in ensuring successful virtual productions.
