What is Fiducial marker in virtual production?

A fiducial marker is a physical object – such as a paper cutout or plastic shape – that is placed in the environment and visible to an imaging system, like a camera. This reference object is used for tracking purposes, usually for motion capture.

Fiducial markers are used on set to provide consistency between shots, enabling filmmakers to maintain accurate information from scene to scene. Using these markers makes it easier to integrate VFX into the final product, since their presence serves as an important reference point. They also allow for quicker shooting times due to the ability to align multiple cameras quickly and accurately. Furthermore, having a consistent approach to setting up fiducial markers ensures that any errors can be identified and rectified in post-production.

A good practice when using fiducial markers is to ensure that they're not too close together, and there's enough space around each one so that the software can properly identify them. It's also important to consider the size of the markers in relation to the camera distance - if they are too small then they may not be picked up by the camera at all.
