Basic Definition:

What is Data manager in virtual production?

A data manager is an essential crewmember on a virtual production set, responsible for the collection and organization of all technical data. With the emergence of ever-evolving technologies and processes, it has become increasingly important to have someone with the skills and expertise needed to manage this data in order to ensure smooth operations and successful results.

A data manager should have experience in working with camera telemetry, tracking telemetry, real-time scene capture, metadata and other data formats commonly used in virtual productions. They must also be adept at quickly organizing, backing up and verifying data, as well as troubleshooting any problems that may arise during production. As such, they must possess both technical proficiency and exceptional organizational capabilities.

On a virtual production set, a data manager would typically handle tasks such as setting up cameras and software for data collection, creating backups for all incoming media, logging footage from various sources into the database, ensuring accuracy of all metadata associated with each shot and project, monitoring system performance during recording sessions, archiving material onto external drives or cloud storage solutions and preparing reports for review by producers and directors.

Having a data manager on a virtual set is absolutely critical for the success of a production. By properly collecting and managing all on-set data, they are able to help streamline workflow, optimize efficiency and mitigate any potential risks before they turn into major issues.
