What is Avatar in virtual production?

A virtual representation of a real-world user often operated via performance capture or physical control interfaces; see also digital humans.

An avatar is a digital representation of a real-world user or character and can be operated via performance capture technology or physical control interfaces like motion sensors. Avatars can appear in any form imaginable – from realistic humanoids to stylized creatures with vibrant colors and fantastical shapes.

In film production, avatars have become essential for creating detailed visual effects and giving filmmakers unprecedented creative freedom. Many different types of avatars are used in film production, depending on their purpose. Motion Capture Avatars recreate movements and expressions through body movement data captured by cameras and sensors. Digital Humans are photorealistic human characters created with CG (computer graphics) software; these often look so lifelike that it’s hard to distinguish them from real humans. Cartoon-style avatars are animated versions of real people or characters who move more freely than regular humans and may possess superhuman abilities.

The use of avatars has opened up exciting possibilities for filmmakers and animators alike. With the help of animation software, they can create unique characters that were previously impossible to produce without expensive equipment and high-end skills. This also allows filmmakers to add special effects that weren't possible before, such as flying animals, surreal landscapes, and fantastic creatures.
