Telepresence is the feeling of immersion in a virtual environment when using an HMD (Head-Mounted Display). It can be likened to "being there" in another world without ever actually having to travel physically. Telepresence has become increasingly important with the emergence of Virtual Production, allowing for enhanced user experiences and eliminating the need to film on location or build physical sets.
Achieving good telepresence involves taking into consideration many factors. Things such as camera movement, lighting, sound design, and field of view all contribute to creating an immersive experience. Additionally, haptics, motion tracking, and latency reduction also play roles in providing realistic feedback while moving around within the virtual world. To further enhance the level of immersion, developers should strive to replicate human physical sensations that occur naturally in our everyday lives.
There are some best practices to consider when trying to increase the level of telepresence. This includes utilizing audio cues to create spatial awareness, making sure the visual fidelity is high enough to avoid any distortion issues, incorporating physics-based interaction between objects and the environment, and adding randomness through artificial intelligence systems. Additionally, using natural controls like gaze control or gesture recognition adds to the lifelike feel of the virtual environment.
There have been several examples of great telepresence in movies and games alike. The Star Trek series stands out due to its unique use of holograms to bridge the gap between the real and digital worlds. For gaming, Half-Life 2 provides a first-person shooter experience unlike any other with its ability to bring players fully into its fictional universe through interactive environments and believable characters. Even more recently, game titles such as No Man's Sky show us what incredible levels of detail can be achieved with today’s technology, offering users incredibly detailed landscapes and planetscapes that exist only within this virtual realm.
